Muaythai Folklore Nai Khanom Tom

After Ayutthaya had been overcome by the Burmese in 1767, the Siamese captives were taken to Burma as war prisoners. Among these captives was Nai Khanom Tom, a high-skilled muay fighter. In 1774, the Burmese king, King Mangra visited Rangoon in the celebration for Ket Tat Pagoda. The king called for the fighting bouts to prove if muay Siam is more superior to muay Burma. Nai Khanom Tom was master enough to be chosen to participate in the contest among all the Siam captives.

The Burmese form of muay is dissimilar to Siamese muay. Primarily, it applied the fists for fighting and their outfits are traditional sarongs which can sometimes obstruct their leg movements. On the contrary, Siamese muay used many parts of the body for fighting including fists, elbows, knees and feet. The fighters wore paa-nung and their both hands were bound in the kaad chuek.

To the king's surprise, Nai Khanom Tom consecutively won over several Burmese fighters. King Mangra, thus, declared "Every part of this man is blessed with venom. Even empty-handed, he could defeat nine or ten opponents."

A statue of Nai Khanom Tom is built to commemorate him at the Provincial Sports Ground in Ayutthaya. Four sparring pairs, placed around the base of the statue, reflect the use of the fist, elbow, knee and foot. A plaque briefly shows the legend ofNai Khanom Tom.

According to the tradition, the 17th of March is regarded as "Muay Thai Day" because it is on this day when Nai Khanom Tom, the "Father of Muay Thai," conquered the Burmese.

Every time you practice Muay Thai – every time you strike a bag with your elbow or throw a thunderous roundhouse kick – you honor Nai Khanom Tom's memory and achievement, whether you know it or not.

Thai Words MuayThai Fan Need To Know

Hope everyone is fine. Please be happy because tomorrow is Friday...and the day after tomorrow, you can enjoy your weekends as well...

In this post, it will be sort of Online Language Class for once..because we just concern that those involve in muaythai need to know some basic Thai words as a path of learning. So here are some of Thai words that frequently use for muaythai terms. Please allowed us to use Thai Language, English and Malay Language together so that it will give better understanding...enjoy learning..

1. Muay = a type of martial art = sejenis seni pertahanan diri

Example: Muay Thai = Thai martial art

Muay Chin = Chinese martial art or refer to Kung Fu

2. Sakon = International = Antarabangsa

So, Muay Sakon = International Muay or refer to boxing = tinju

3. Boran = Ancient = Kuno

So, Muay Boran = Ancient Muay = Muay Lama / Kuno

4. Nak muay = boxer = Petinju / ahli muay

Nak can be refer to words ahli in Malay but only for certain words.

Example: Nak Muay = Petinju/ahli muay, Nak Kila = Ahli Sukan,

Nak Kritha =Olahragawan

So simply it would be, Nakmuay = petinju, Nakmuay ying = Petinju wanita

Words Nak Muay can be use to refer to any type of muay: muay sakon, muay thai, etc (no need to put Nak Muay Sakon, Nak Muay Thai , etc)

*Notes: If you say Nak Muay Thai, it will refer to Nak Muay from Thailand

5. Wai Khru = Master Respecting = Sembah Guru

Separately, word Wai is refer to Thai respecting style (as you see when Thai people meet, they will Wai each other) and word Khru is directly means teacher or guru/ cikgu in Malay.

The Kiddy NakMuay

If we talk about muaythai..most of people will think about the energetic sport, full of power, muscle or sometimes 'cruel'. Well I guess those person that say so..totally not the 'muaythai people' because they just can't think about the bestest of muaythai..

Here we like to share is about the muaythai kid...another words will be..kiddy nakmuay..in Thai word will be..nakmuay dek..

In Thailand, where muaythai are nicely develop, kid at 8 already hold 30 -40 fights records. Wooww...impress a lot..

In Thailand, muaythai is one of the most favorite sport among kid.

Learning muaythai help kid to grow up with good discipline , increase their concentration (more focus) and build a healthy body.

Muaythai teach a lot: fighting spirit, respect others, self improvement, etc

At Saiprawat Boxing Gym, we do have kids joining muaythai training sessions. Some of them:--

Athachai Saiprawat: son of Kiang Saiprawat (gym owner). He is 8 years old. His 1st fight is against Abang Naga Api Gombak at Perlis Fight Night on September 2010. He lose in the fight, but he gain more than experience....

Somboon Pravust Saiprawat: He is 3 years old. The only son of Pin Saiprawat, trainer at Saiprawat Boxing Gym. Soon to be great nak muay... He love to see and give a try at the gym...although he is not seriously involve in training sessions (of course not...he like running around the gym..and kick the Size M sand bag, running around and do the tyre jump...and goes around again....), but we believe that he is among the best... * his face look so innocent..but actually he is so so active..

Loy Krathong

Hi readers...

This post is not about muaythai..but I just want to share something about Thai festivals...Loy Krathong...hope you don't mind ..

Tomorrow, 21 Nov 2010, is Loy Krathong Day..and here I'll let you see some pictures about the festivals...

In Thai words, Loy means float...loy krathong means float the krathong..Picture above is krathong. Peoples at my place use to make krathong like this..simply made from banana trunk, banana leaves and the small flower as in the pictures..sorry I don't know the flowers name..

This is how the krathong was floated..make a wish and let it flow..

One of the interesting event during Loy Krathong Festival is Beauty Pageants..my place did organized this event and there were participants from different races...they have Malay, Chinese, Indian and Siamese...'1 Malaysia' applied..

You can also join this festivals at local temple...it's ok to join and experience by yourself as it is one of Thais event that can be celebrate by all races...

One of the place that will held this festivals this year is at Jitra, Kedah..
